Practical Brief Notes

Previous to planning this out my essay should have a good solid plan, and images for reference/context. Through this research, plan and context I should have highlighted some ideas, perspectives or strategies to apply for this practical brief.

This brief should seem like a real life design brief - needs a clear purpose and outcome. Need to resolve a brief with the design and take inspiration from approaches and strategies explored in essay.

Analysing the brief > audience considerations > visual research >
initial ideas > process/develop/iterate > feedback >
develop/finesse > final outcome

Some ideas for : Publishing - digital:

Publication designed exclusively for print / publication designed
exclusively for digital / publishing platform that crosses print and
digital media / digital zine / high-end reproduction of populist
glossy title

Use these subheadings:
- Title (the artist and where)
- Background (who the artist is, what the exhibition is)
- Brief (simplify everything under the subheadings)
- Deliverables (amount of posters, size)
- Mandatory requirements (must include info of exhibition and place of exhibitions logo)
- Aim (to reflect the artist, utilise postmodern typefaces & layouts with consideration of the relevance of legibility within its context.)

Example on how to write brief:
Title: Yoko Ono at Leeds
Background: Yoko Ono (b.1933) is an internationally renowned multimedia artist and peace activist. A chief proponent of the Fluxus movement, Yoko Ono is known for her performance and instruction-based artworks which have been shown internationally. This exhibition is a major new exhibition for Leeds Arts University that will take place in the new gallery space as part of the University’s expansion.
Brief: Produce a series of 3 poster designs to promote the Yoko Ono exhibition at Leeds Arts University. Your poster designs should reflect the University’s values and should celebrate Yoko Ono’s identity as an artist.
Deliverables: A series of 3 x A2 posters
Mandatory requirements: Must include the University logo. Must include correct dates, times and places. Must be engaging and befitting of Yoko Ono’s status.
Research aims: To reflect Yoko Ono as a postmodern artist/performer utilise postmodern typefaces and layouts. Consider their potential in terms of legibility and communication.

Your task [1]:

  1. Using this brief format write a brief for your practical investigation.
  2. Your brief must have a specific purpose and outcome and provide you with enough opportunity to explore the issues, ideas, approaches examined in your second essay.
It is necessary that your brief has an obvious client/purpose and that it looks like a graphic design brief. These are necessary parameters to produce a successful design outcome.

Your task [2]:
Homework:

  1. Audience considerations – outline the specific details and/or requirements of your audience.
  2. Visual research – explore existing work of a similar nature; list some of the key features that you wish to utilise from these examples

Initial ideas:
A political zine - feminist
A zine for self-expression - art or applicable to a niche movement/interest
A blog zine
