"This paper provides an overview of the positive and negative effects of new mass media introductions on the magazine publishing industry from an historical perspective. Since the early 1900s, the trends of new media both displacing magazines as well as spurring magazine sales and introductions are evident through the introduction of feature films, sound recordings, radio, television, computers, and the World Wide Web. New media have a tendency to both displace magazines, but also cause increasing specialization. The overriding goal of this paper is to provide a perspective for magazine publishers and scholars as they address the increasing penetration of the World Wide Web."
- This essay highlights the importance of looking at both the positives and negatives in my own essay as I will need to create a debate. Mainly, as highlighted by the essay, the effect of displacing magazines (their position in media is no longer a main source of modern culture) but also allowing people to become more skilful in editorial design and also increasing the sales of magazines possibly due to the trend of wanting more physical and hand on elements in a protest against the digitalisation of all media.
- Focusing in on the magazine publishing industry also looks in on the effect of e-magazines and e-zines which will allow me to then explore the accessibility to self publishing.

"How are developments in digital and mobile media, for example, creating new possibilities for producing, distributing and consuming journalism and, in turn, informing an innovatory journalism practice?"
"What are the implications of these changes for traditional business models and for the emergence of new financial strategies to fund journalism?"
"How are these developments evidenced in particular national contexts with their bespoke journalism cultures, histories and professional practices? What are the consequences for journalism education, training and employment, along with journalists’ changing perceptions of their professional roles?"
"Finally, what are the implications of this fundamental restructuring of journalism for the ethical, political and democratic life of communities locally, nationally and globally?"
- A focus on e-magazines, e-zines and mobile formatting.
- Also highlights the new possibilities and accessibility for anyone to be able to publish and consume. It takes away the limits people had before in accessing stuff such as global or economic limitations. We can now consume media/publishings from all over the world and all sorts of sources.
- Innovatory journalism practice - could this be independent styles being brought to light?
"What are the implications of these changes for traditional business models and for the emergence of new financial strategies to fund journalism?"
- Traditional business models may find a drop in sales as people no longer have to pay to access information. There is endless sources in which an audience can now access or read about news events and it can happen so quickly (the need for speed - audiences get bored faster?) due to online journalism and social media updates.
- How can traditional publishing business fund their new journalism? - Something to focus in on. This could be creating e-magazines and using advertisements.
"How are these developments evidenced in particular national contexts with their bespoke journalism cultures, histories and professional practices? What are the consequences for journalism education, training and employment, along with journalists’ changing perceptions of their professional roles?"
- Possible decrease in need for training and employment as people can now earn money through self publishing.
- Journalists now have a much larger audience that can be accessed. They also may feel the need to take on the role of an influencer/blogger.
"Finally, what are the implications of this fundamental restructuring of journalism for the ethical, political and democratic life of communities locally, nationally and globally?"
- Important contexts that need to be researched.*
