Feedback on practical

  • zines are something you want to keep
  • very punk aesthetic - clearly see its connection.
  • like that it's not messy but could be more experimental and modern - use an original typeface.
  • more likely to read something if it's infront of you - a pro of zines.
  • feels alot better/more accomplished reading something physical - pro of zines.
  • need to push on the element on why you'd want to keep a zine.
  • digital is alot easier to access so need to emphasise the need for physical.
  • include tactile elements like something really obviously different.
  • look at how i want the reader to read it.
  • push beyond just columns/vertical text.
  • is there an element for the reader to interact with it?
  • push the idea that you cant interact with internet
  • the way its bound or unbound.
  • bind that you rip the page to read it - would show that you didn't read it. *DIY
  • user can categorise the page themselves - had to put em together according to the code. put them into a binder?
  • play with margins in a way you couldn't do on professionally published/commercial internet.
  • modern approach doesn't have to be the aesthetic it can be the format.
Overall there was a positive reaction to the idea of using a zine to represent the idea that there is a place for print in modern day publishing as was highlighted by peer's responses that you feel more accomplished when reading something physical and are more likely to read it and keep it. The punk aesthetic was easily understood. However, there needs to be more to the zine that emphasise why a consumer would need it rather than digital as it was highlighted that digital is easier to access. The overarching idea of how to approach this is by adding more tactile elements to it, pushing more with the idea of including a textured front cover as this was a big selling point for the peers.

Moving forward with the idea of making the zine more interactive, I need to experiment with bounding techniques and look at methods in which the reader can physically manoeuvre it rather than  just flicking through it. Ideas for this were binding the book in a way so that the page must be ripped to read the next as this brings to attention the accomplishment and the difference in reading something physical rather than digital. More simply, it could be the unfolding of the zine. A combination of techniques may make it more enjoyable and experimental.

My concern was how to approach the punk zine in a modern way as that was my self set brief. I was finding much of the feedback very experimental and pure DIY punk in terms of experimenting more with handwritten and collage techniques. However it was highlighted that the modern approach does not have to be content, but instead the format. This is emphasised with the idea of book binding techniques as tools and access to information on book binding is more accessible to me than it was to the 1970's punk zinesters. The text layout can also reflect this, such as experimentations with margins and columns digitally instead of having to recreate the collage then photocopy process. Additionally, creating a more organic typeface that was not commonly seen in punk zines can represent the modern day approach as I can access softwares to help me achieve that and the reasoning behind the typeface can mimic the brief.

zine that has to be made into an accordions style?
