Essay Structuring and Critical Points

What Impact has the Internet and Digital Media had on Editorial Design and Publications?

introduction:
the future of publishing has been shaped predominantly by the effects of the internet and digital media, in particular social media…
the new digital platforms that traditional print sources have jumped on…
newspapers to e-news and apps for accessibility and exploring brand loyalty
how audiences interact with digital media versus print media
how zines have risen in popularity and how they stay relevant as a print text.
need to conclude that there is a place for print in this new publishing world.

The future of the publishing industry has been challenged and shaped by the effects of the internet and digital media, in particular social media. Social Media has not only brought about new media formats that no longer solely rely on formatting, but also the criticism of large publishing corporations and therefore the need for more personal self-publications, such as zines. This rise in ability to create professional self-publications and the self-marketing offered through social media poses the question on what the role of traditional publishers and editorial designers are now, and if traditional print has a place has a place in the media anymore.

Point: Traditional print such as magazines and news no longer have a place as they no longer offer anything more than digital articles and social media do. Accessibility is their main priority.
Focus: How do users interact with both and why was physical publications more important? how is that no longer relevant?
Counterpoint: Might stay relevant to more traditional users however in terms of future, this doesn’t apply as… criticism of corporations? the need for fast, honest and neutral information?

Point: Becoming digital is not enough as they now need to alter more to remain relevant.
Focus: social media news, apple news, sharing news, hashtags, editorial design.
Counterpoint: these all reflect people’s needs to express their own opinion and understand other’s opinions rather than focus on the Brand’s voice.

Following point: news and magazines are losing their personal voice to self publishers. could be youtubers, bloggers, influencers.
Focus: It’s there for people to respond to rather than interact with. Self publishers now have a bigger voice and change the role of the traditional industry.
Counterpoint: The industry still remains a more professional voice and audiences are still dependent on their output of information.

Point: The criticism and anti of large corporations and the over digitalisation creates an even bigger gap for a personal and physical voice… Zines.
Focus: what do zines offer that online doesn’t and how do people interact with this and how social media helps this.
Counterpoint: Zines aren’t a mass production that can influence everyone therefore does not replace the function of online media but fills a gap online media cannot.

Conclusion: Online media is important in… , but the gap for …makes zines the only remaining publishing text that is needed and is more likely to be more positively affected by the developments in social media.
