COP Briefing

OUGD501 
The brief is set by yourself and your areas of interest - the practical and essay are marked together.

Module Aims:

  • Applying a range of methods, analysis, and critical evaluation of theories and context based on individual concerns within art, design and media.
  • Develop and examine analytical, critical and reflective responses to your research.
  • Critically explore the theoretical and practical contexts of these individual practices and concerns.
  • To prepare learners for the theoretical and practical research demands of Level 6.
The Brief:

  • Need to produce a 2500 word essay and a body of practical work based on the research and findings of a theme focusing in an area of Graphic Design. 
  • The practical will be developed in response to the theme and build on the knowledge established through the research - needs to explore the creative, practical and pragmatic issues surrounding the theme. (Doesn't need to solve problems, just research and experiment with solutions.)
  • There must be a clear brief and justified design process, conveying that you understand the context of your theme and Graphic Design.
  • The essay and practical will be assessed as a whole.
Submission:
  • 2500 word essay with Harvard referencing and a bibliography.
  • Practical with 6 design boards - research, idea generation, developments and outcomes.
  • Blog documenting project developments, reflections, feedback, study tasks and any other related work.
Essay Structure:
  1. Introduction - what are you investigating
  2. Critical Argument - discussion and analysis of academic sources
  3. Analysis - case studies which could be illustration, objects, practitioners/practice, cultural phenomena that relate to the theme.
  4. Conclusion - discussing the evidence raised
  5. Harvard Bibliography

The Brief:

Critical, speculative, experimental, justifying choices
Opportunity to set your own intentions and explore your own interests - broader culture - can relate to graphic design but get inspiration from other areas of interest e.g looking at books in fine art, architecture, etc.
The brief has to be open ended enough so that there isn't a simple answer - it could be looking at the relationship between two things for example
