- What are the important points? the core theories, concepts and argument - These can become the rules in your work or it can be something that is challenged.
- How can you test your ideas? - questionnaires (can't ask very personal things but can ask some general questions. how do you know how people feel about your theme without asking questions?), focus groups, practical experimenting and testing. *Could ask people if they see the relation between expressive type and image and if they think type has to be practical?
- Your target audience for this research - who am I going to target?
- Contextualise the problem (methodology) - theories/concepts/arguments, discipline and audience, why do I want to use certain processes? - why do I want to use the Letterpress? (standard type very related to history)
* if you want to ask questions (questionnaire, focus group etc) there is the Ethical Approval and other forms.
Research and Rationale Crit
Research and Rationale Crit
Have to have these ideas done for a crit at the end of the session at 11/11:20.
Explain.
What is the question?
Research - what have you found out?
Theories – context – discipline - relationship / links?
How could this be tested?
Simple graphic design problem?
Audience?
Examples?
Critique
Is it appropriate?
What are the projects potential strengths and weaknesses?
Could the practical be more focussed?
Is it a design problem? Could it be refined? How could it be one?
Is it achievable - how? Steps – planning.
Suggest and discuss at least 6 variations – initial ideas or starting points.
Where should they start?

Christmas Task
- Design Board 1 - Research
What is the focus of the project?
Theories / concepts linked?
Examples - case studies?
Audiences?
- Design Board 2 - Rationale
The reasoning for your project
Why are you doing it?
Graphic Design context - discipline.
What you intend to test - theories and concepts identified - a design problem
