"The rise and rise of new media has brought about a revolution in graphic expression, primarily through typography. With a relatively basic desktop computer and access to the internet, today independent designers can produce and distribute fonts around the world. while countless books provide showcases for the latest typographic design, Emotional Digital is the first to document the latest typefaces presented by the designers who created them. Invited to submit their best printed media, the fifty most influential international foundries reveal an incredibly wide spectrum of work - from brochures and flyers to postcards, type specimen books and posters, that shows just how expression and personal type can be."
People who work with fonts are often confronted with the old design principle 'less is more'. Many a time, we've heard old-school typographers claim 'I have never used more than the same three type families in my work'.
This is a commendable limitation that can make life easier. But look at the vast selection of type available internationally and you'll see that the less-is-more approach no longer holds true. Every day new fonts and foundries spring up from the soil like mushrooms.
When asked by a journalist why so many typefaces exist, Adrian Frutiger whose international reputation was made with the creation of Univers typeface (1957), responded with a question of his own, 'Why are there so many wines?'. There is no justification for complaining about the constantly expanding selection. You can never have too much choice.
