Crit 28/04

Essay Questions:
1. Title Adjustments - "contemporary" is this needed?, "one-off" is it better to focus on type that is only needed for one reason?, "standardised" modernist?
2. Historical context - is it worth talking about the history of how bespoke type started? Pre and post digital age and how it changed the role of the designer?
3. Should I touch open how nowadays bespoke type is possibly not as exciting?
4. "experimental type" in research is also about the context in which the type is placed e.g standardised type placed experimentally is still experimental type - how this affects practical?

Practical Questions:
Based on feedback with Dom, I needed to reflect on which route I'm going with the practical. Both these ideas are very similar, however one focuses on the idea of completely replacing image and me associating a standardised type with the image e.g Futura, whereas the second is using something that already exists (branding) and replacing that with the bespoke type.
Which is best and least biased?

Feedback:
  • All bespoke typefaces are context reliant
  • Sofa typeface is reminiscent of Habitat and is instantly recognisable as 70's
  • Second idea is best - more testable, there are limitations and constraints left in place, and picking an existing design/branding allows for research to dictate the typeface
  • Branding - research into the topic - test - more critical analysis of outcome
  • Symbol & motif that is branding is bespoke type
  • Historical context is important and need to highlight how type is driven by technology and aesthetic eras e.g Art Nouveau and Art Deco - how they weren't considered as decorative during the era.
  • Not too much history - the essay should not be covering a timeline.
  • Clear critical points, focusing on contemporary and relating back to history for context
