What impact has the internet and digital media had on editorial design and publications?
A. Legibility
- Typography and communication: how have the Editorial Designers ensured the text is effective in communicating to the audience, even on new digital media platforms. How has the change in Typography (if applicable) been affected by the impact of the internet e.g The Guardian's new logo to stay more current and connote a different personality. Is the access to internet and digital media responsible to a general appeal towards more experimental work (post-modern)/
- Functionality: Are the new digital media platforms functional? How is this done - downloadable apps, 'news' homepage on Apple. Zines - has the function of social media use made them more successful - Yes, and why?
- Modern vs Post-modern: How these new impacts take values from both Modernist and Post-modernist values. e.g How zines have been allowed to remain as experimental as they were in the Punk era (post-modernist) and be considered complete publications.
B. Persuasion
- Manipulation:
- Audience Studies:
- Encoding/Decoding:
C. Lifestyle
- Brand Loyalty: Original readers/audiences of the text such as physical magazines or newspapers will be more likely to use the app or subscribe to online subscriptions. Apps also allow for a wider audience to become more loyal. Displaying/sharing news articles from the same brand on Apple homepage or social media (Facebook/Twitter highlights) reaches more audiences.
D. Digital Media
- Media Platforms:
- Media Markets:
- UGC:
- Social Media
E. User Experience (UX)
- User-centred Design/Usability: How apps are designed to be more user friendly
- Interactivity: Zines are more personal and allow the audience member to feel more connected. Often bought through e-shops - collectors item as it contradicts mass-production and mass-marketing - more special?
Overall, these key terms have suggested that to continue approaching my practical brief with the intention of creating a zine, my essay needs to focus on the digitalisation of publications (to cover C and D) and the ability to self-publish as a result of social media.
This can then bring in the debates of how zines create consequences for the role of a 'professional' journalist/editorial designer as the ability to connect to and reach an audience through social media allows almost anyone to self-publish and become successful (Zines also go against the original idea of brand identity and are more an expression of self-identity to relate or appeal to a (niche?) audience- Punk era.)
